How the engagement rate is calculated

We count the interactions on an average post and divide by three different audiences. Each is multiplied by 100 to give a percentage.

  • By followers = (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers
  • By reach = (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ accounts reached
  • By views = (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ views

Saves and shares only count if you enter them. For the benchmark we use the public rate — likes plus comments over followers (over views on YouTube) — because that is what our benchmarks measure and what a brand can see from outside your account.

Typical engagement rates in India, by size

Our estimates of a typical public engagement rate. Below about 45% of the typical figure is worth investigating; above about 2.25× it starts to look inflated. Last reviewed November 2026.

Engagement falls as accounts grow: a 5,000-follower account is mostly friends and loyal fans; a million-follower account reaches many casual viewers. Comparing yourself to your own tier is the only fair test.

Engagement rate calculator: common questions

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram in India?

It depends on account size. By our estimates, under 10K followers a typical rate is around 5.5%, 10K–50K around 3.8%, 50K–250K around 2.6%, 250K–1M around 1.8%, and above 1M around 1.2%. Anything well below roughly half of your tier’s typical rate is worth looking into.

How is engagement rate calculated?

Add up the interactions on a post — likes and comments, plus saves and shares if you have your insights — divide by followers (or reach, or views), and multiply by 100. Average your last 6–9 posts rather than using one post; a single viral post skews the number.

Why does the calculator show three different rates?

Each answers a different question. By followers tells a brand how much of your audience reacts. By reach shows how people who actually saw the post responded, which is fairer when reach is low. By views is the standard for video, and the only fair measure on YouTube where many viewers don’t subscribe.

Is a very high engagement rate always good?

No. Past a point — roughly 2.25× the typical rate for your size — a high rate starts to look like engagement pods, giveaways or bought likes, and brands will ask why. A rate that is strong but believable is what you want.

Should saves and shares count towards engagement?

For your own analysis, yes — saves and shares are the strongest signals of content people value. But brands can only see likes and comments, so our benchmark compares the public rate (likes + comments) to keep it like-for-like.

What is a good engagement rate on YouTube?

On YouTube, judge engagement against views, not subscribers. Likes plus comments of around 3–6% of views is healthy; smaller channels tend to sit at the top of that range.

How can I improve my engagement rate?

Post consistently, open with a hook in the first two seconds, reply to comments in the first hour, ask a specific question in your caption, and make content people want to save — checklists, recipes, how-tos. Remove inactive or bot followers too; they lower your rate without adding anything.

Is this engagement rate calculator free?
